Battle on the Bullhead Official Rules

  • Playing time: 3 x 20 mins, running time (time is not stopped after goals but it is stopped after penalties as scoreboard operation requires this). During the last 2 minutes of every game, the time is stopped with every whistle unless there is a goal differential of 7 or greater. The breaks between periods are 1 minute. Final game – 3 x 20 mins running time, the breaks between periods are 1 minute. In all games, if there is only 5 minutes remaining in the time slot, the clock will be dropped to 2 minutes and the final 2 minutes will be stop time play.
  • In the event of a tie score at the end of medal round games, each team is awarded 3 penalty shots. If the game is still tied, there shall be 1 penalty shot for each team until the game is resolved. All players (excluding goalies) must shoot once before any player is allowed to shoot a second time. Round-robin games can end with a tie (see tournament system below).
  • Penalties: A minor penalty is 2 mins. A major penalty is 5 mins.
  • Number of players for each game: 20 including goalies, the number of players in the team for the tournament is unlimited. A player can play only for one team in the tournament.

  • Coincidental minor/major penalties: When coincidental minor penalties or coincidental major penalties of equal duration are imposed against players of both teams, the penalized players shall all take their places in the penalty box and teams shall play 5 on 5. Such penalized players should not leave the penalty box until the first non-stoppage of play following the expiry of their respective penalties.
  • A match penalty involves the suspension of the player for the balance of the game, and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately. An alternate player is to replace the penalized player for the full penalty duration, regardless of the number of goals scored. A player incurring a match penalty shall automatically receive a game suspension. The organizing committee reserves the right to expel such a player from the tournament.
  • Time-outs: Each team shall be allowed a maximum of one 30-second time-out per game.
  • Teams are to have 2 proper and unified jerseys (home and away). Home teams will wear dark.

Tournament Format

  • Teams start in one of two round-robin pools (3 teams per pool). Each team plays one round-robin game against each of the teams in the opposite pool, amounting to 3 round-robin games per team.
  • Team standings after their three round-robin games determine medal-round positions. The top two teams, regardless of being in pool A or B, after round-robin play qualify for the gold final, the two teams ranked 3rd and 4th after round-robin play qualify for the silver final, and the 5th and 6th ranked teams play for the bronze final. Two teams from the same pool can end up playing each other for a final game.
  •  All round-robin games will be played using the following scoring system: A maximum of five points total will be awarded as follows: period win – one point, period tie – half point, win the game – two points, tie the game – one point. The game can end with a tie.

The following criteria decide the team standings in the round-robin group:

  1. Number of points
  2. Head-to-head match final result (if applicable)
  3. Head-to-head match number of points (if applicable)
  4. Goals for/goals against (GF/GA) difference
  5. Total higher number of scored goals
  6. Lower number of penalty minutes
  7. Coin toss

Medal round games must be decided by a clear – cut winner unless the time slot has completely expired. In this case, a coin toss will decide the winner. The visiting team gets to call heads/tails in this case.
